26 ways to improve your prose

by David Hughes on June 8, 2009

Last month saw the publication of John Simmons book

One of the things I like most about the book is John Simmons’ belief that we are all capable of writing in a more compelling and persuasive manner. In this latest addition to the bookshelf he gives us practical tools to help unleash that potential.

Twenty-six ways of looking at a blackberry: How to let writing release the creativity of your brand

I had high hopes for the book from the outset having enjoyed many of John’s other books. A particular favourite has been ‘We, Me, Them & It’. And in ‘Twenty-six ways’ he returns to the theme of writing powerfully for business.

Taking a single base text, he returns to it twenty six times through the distorting lenses of, amongst others, Dickens, Greek myth, the graphic novel, Shakespearean sonnets, detective fiction and haiku. What he leaves the reader with is not so much a prescription for better writing, a list of do’s and don’ts, but rather a whole series of methods to subvert the commonplace, avoid the formulaic and seek out a more interesting route.

First Fridays

Piers’ recent work on behalf of the International Fund Raising Consultancy (IFC), a sub-brand called First Fridays, prompted this remark from John Baguley the IFC’s founder:

“Piers is a genius and you can quote me on that. He has created some stunning products for us that perfectly capture the spirit of First Fridays which is different from the IFC itself, more fun and light hearted.

First Fridays have taken off and we have both a full house at The Hub – Kings Cross every first Friday of the month from 2.00 – 5.00 and a budding Facebook group ‘First Friday fundraisers’ from around the world.”

John Baguley – International Fundraising Consultancy

John Baguley has been a long standing client for many of us. First at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture and subsequently, via the IFC, for many other charities and not for profit organisations. We owe him a lot for the interesting and worthwhile projects he has invited us to work on over the years.

John asked Piers to create an IFC sub-brand that had a chatty, informal tone of voice to match the atmosphere at the meetings.
He designed [...]
